I previously had Windows 7 on my laptop but after i rd of “7″ Linux could not play sound. It worked when i used the Live CD. I currently have Linux 10.04 and a Compaq Laptop. Please simplify the best you can i am not a “tech person”. Plus i am fairly new to Linux.
Most likely, linux isn’t compatible with the sound card your laptop has. If you really need sound, go back to Windows 7.
Or if you really need or like linux and you cant live without it, get a sound card that is compatible with your laptop that can run with linux.
First give a right click on the volume control and open up the sound settings.
make sure the volume is not mute and the various sound devices are set medium-high.
i will assume that ver. 10.04 refers to ubuntu, in which case, everything is well documented online. If you’ve tried the above and still no sound, just remember this; it will use either ALSA or PULSE audio. Follow the online tutorials for installing sound. it’s a piece of cake.
Also, don’t be shy. When linux tutorials say ‘open a terminal and type xyz’…just do it and see what happens. If it doesn’t work, that’s ok — keep reading and trying. Have a flexible approach to problem solving and take responsibility for your actions.

You can dualboot if you want. i use linuxmint (www.linuxmint.com) and i can use my built in microphone and cam. it comes working for sites like gmail / tinychat/ youtube to detect your cam/mic etc..
there are programs you can use like ‘cheese!’ to take pics and ‘kdenlive’ are good for editing videos.

I assume you mean for internet use, Skype and google talk work with the camera and microphone. Yahoo messenger does not.
