what is the cons with a linux laptop? i really want the ASUS Eee PC 8G Windows Laptop (Pure White) for christmas but i saw that it is a linux laptop. does it come with internet? could you install AIM on it? tell me!!!

this question is mainly about an ASUS Eee.Is it a good laptop? what are the pros and cons with it?

If you don’t know the answers to these basic questions or can’t even be bothered to do a little research on your own then you don’t want linux, you’d hate it.

Buy the Windows version (there are two versions of the laptop, one with Windows, one with the customized Linux distribution)

Linux: Linux is probably the best OS out there. It is really easy to use, virus proof, and comes with stuff like internet, AIM, etc. Its much faster and easier to use than windows.

Pros: Really lite ,Easy to use, Fast, Looks great, inexpensive
Cons: Not much space (you cant have loads of music, movies, games or apps), doesn’t have much capability for games (it can only play 2d games), No upgrade space

Linux should come with an Internet browser(Firefox) and is almost as capable as Windows.

You can also get AIM for it.

Linux generally has less problems than Windows and is way more reliable, so it’s a good choice.

asus eee pc comes with wireless capabilities and asus eee pc will have windows xp or linux. Linux have a program called pidgin which is a universal instant messenger
personally id get an asus n10 instead

toshiba tablet pen get Can some1 suggest a website / manufacturer that sells linux pre installed on a laptop ?
such that the hardware supports linux.

Thanx

Linux supports all hardware.

just get a laptop without any included operating system and burn a copy of ubuntu on a disc and download that way

here are three sites http://www.thelinuxlaptop.com/index.php http://www.linuxcertified.com/linux_laptops.html http://www.system76.com/index.php?cPath=28

Dell sells laptops with Ubuntu preinstalled.

But it’s usually about the same price or cheaper to just by a laptop with Windows preinstalled and install Linux over it, and there’s not a lot that Linux won’t run on.

Linux will run fine on most laptops made in the last 6 years or so. You can use a live CD/DVD to boot into Linux if you only want to test it. Also, the majority of live CD’s will also install Linux right from the CD if you want it. Many of the live CD’s will also boot from a USB flash drive as well as retain any changes and work you might do in Linux. Most newer computers can boot from the USB drive.

I don’t know of any computer manufacturers that offer Linux pre-installed except perhaps some of the netbooks are running a version of Linux because they don’t have enough memory/power to run Windows.

What you might do is order a laptop without any operating system installed at all. This should save you some money in theory. Then you can install any Linux of your choice. Simply download and burn a CD/DVD of the Linux you want or perhaps need. The only problem is that it may not be an option from some computer makers.

If you are completely unfamiliar with linux, I suggest downloading live CD’s of the various main distributions. This will give you an idea what you might like better.

If you go to a local computer shop, they will usually build a computer to any specification you might make. This would include having Linux installed. The only problem is it might be more expensive.
