How to install Linux on laptop that is running on windows XP?

My windows recovery CD seems to be pretty damaged and I’m not planning on buying new CD.I know that linux is free,so I would like try it but I don’t know how to install it.Can anyone explain me step-by-step?I will really appreciate it.

burn it to a disc and then pop the disc in and boot from there…it’s not that hard. (i don’t mean that in a rude way, i mean it really isn’t that hard)

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 9 LTS which is built upon Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support) its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 LTS then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

toshiba folio 100 tablet get I have a Compaq Presario 1700T. Right now I’m running Windows ME and I don’t like it. Please don’t direct me to the webstie “Linux for Laptops” because the link for this model doesn’t work. I also need help in layman’s terms.

I would suggest starting with a ” LIVE CD ” as you do not have to install anything. Get Ubuntu its free as most linux distros are. See how you like it and test drive before you install anything. Just in case Linux is not for you.

1st. Download ubuntu feisty fawn 7.04 cd at http://www.distromania.com (download faster than ubuntu.com)
2nd. Check ur laptop’s hardware and download necessary linux compatible driver written for your compaq.
3rd. Boot ubuntu live cd onto your laptop and see all those network card, mouse, keyboard display are working correctly..
4th. if you can surf the internet or connect your network that’s good.
5th. Play with ‘em for a while.. if you seems to like it. Double click the install icon on desktop and that’s it

Go to www.distrowatch.com you will be able to Find Any Linux Systems you would like. That is any system Developed some are from 45 MB and UP!! If you Have DSL or Faster then it only takes about 1Hr or Less to Download a System.
