Can you install Linux on a Windows laptop?

My brother has a Toshiba Satellite laptop, and I’m probably going to buy it soon. Right now it has Windows XP. I was wondering if it was possible to uninstall Windows and install Linux on the laptop, since it was probably made to be a Windows. If you have any tips, it would be greatly appreciated.

ya you can definitely do that. I would recommend using ubuntu… very user friendly and stable linux distro

Yes you can, I would suggest a ubuntu linux operating system because it very popular and supports most hardware. I would suggest giving it a try.

I would suggest trying it out through a live cd before an install so you can make sure it is fully supports. Some times it has problems with some wireless and graphic cards. The documentation there can help you with the install if you have any problems or questions.

you can definitely do this. i have a compaq presario with windows vista. it doesn’t matter what os you have you can always install a different one. what i did is set up my computer so that when you turn it on, you have to choose which os to use. I have windows and linux (fedora10) installed. what you must do is partition your harddrive. Partitioning is when you divide the memory on your hard drive. Your os is stored on the drive and when you boot the computer, the os is loaded from the drive into the ram where it “lives” while the computer is running. I have a 250gb drive and i have it set up to where windows uses like 20gb for the os and 180gb for windows storage, and fedora os is stored within 10gb and uses 40gb for linux storage. when you install it you can choose how much space is used for what, but i would advise reading into dual booting, and partition sizing. also you don’t even have to install linux to use it. You can insert what is called a live cd and this is how it works. When your computer is started it read the os code from the cd, rather than the harddrive, and loads the code from the cd into the ram. So basically you run os from cd rather than drive. you can read up on how to burn live cd’s. Also some of these other people are suggesting ubuntu, but i would not recommend that. I tried ubuntu but couldn’t get wireless internet to work. if you have atheros chipset, which you very likely do, ubuntu does not come with the required driver and is very hard to get and install. fedora comes with this driver preinstalled and should already work. it did for me!

toshiba tablet price get My old laptop got Linux Debian on it for my uni work (I finished now). It is NOT dual boot, there no Windows on it, just Linux Debian.

I want Windows XP back on it but how do I wipe Linux Debian off my laptop? I have tried look online but it all dual boot guides.

Just boot off the Windows XP install disk, when you get to screen about your hard drive just delete the partition(s) and format. Then let the install complete the install. When finish you will have a copy XP up and running. Do a search on how to install XP.
