Can a Linux laptop read my docs that I backed up from a Windows Vista?

linux laptop
by haxney

I recently copied my docs, music, and photos to an external HD. I’m looking at different notebooks and several use Linux, which I have zero experience with. Will I have any problems accessing my files from the external drive?

No, depending on the version of linux (Probably ubuntu) you should have no problem. One thing to keep in mind if you get ubuntu is to install “Restricted extras” from the software center so you can play more media (Mp3, mp4, divx etc)

Generally speaking, it should be able to read it fine.

Software available to Linux systems should be able to read the file formats Microsoft uses.

o no

If you use ubuntu then it can definitely read.back-up the data. If you still have any confusion then please discuss in ubuntu forum:

where thousands of users are there.

First of all, Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux! Yes, it will be able to read all MS Office documents. If you are getting Ubuntu, then it will come with OpenOffice Suite, which is the free opensource alternative for MS Office.

Be wise in your purchase!

laptops under 300.I LOVE to design, but i am moving with my sister soon and i can’t take my old desktop computer that i had when i was living with my mom, so i decided to invest in the Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop(just ordered it online). I was wondering what programs are compatible with this laptop? By the way, i use Photoshop CS3 Extended now. Also if you have any other tips for me about this laptop please leave them!.

If you know what IRC is you can grab a client connect to the server irc.freenode.net and /join #wine they can help you set up your system to use Photoshop CS3 Extended if you still want to use that. If not GIMP is a good alternative, if harder to use. If you need additional help with Linux please just email me at Hardolaf@yahoo.com

It already has Open Office for general word, draw and calc and you probably have to use The Gimp instead of Photoshop.

Photoshop is never going to run on that tiny little thing, Wine or not.

It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won’t be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don’t worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

Check this out:

Look up your favorite Windows programs, and check out the Linux alternatives.

Also, there is a program called Wine, which allows you to run many Windows programs on Linux. I don’t think Photoshop CS3 runs yet, but I know Photoshop CS2 runs quite well. Photoshop might take up all the hard drive space on that thing. Check out GIMP for a photoshop alternative, it’ll most likely be preinstalled on your laptop

you have chosen a computer that is slow memory wise. It is brilliant for what it was designed for but . . . .
Look at ubuntu studio and consider installing that. Either way Xandros is not the best OS for the eeePC so try Xubuntu or Mandriva would be my first choice
