How can i define my laptop on linux ?

I Have a laptop lenovo n200 model 0769 And i installed linux suse 10.2
where can i get the hardware support for my laptop ?

http://www.lenovo.com may have stuff.

Else http://www.opensuse.com

Normally when you install Linux it will auto detect all the hardware that can be supported. Some strange hardware simply won’t work, it simply won’t have a driver available. It’s often the wireless LAN cards that suffer from that fate so you may need to use a Cat5 cable to wire your machine to your home/SOHO router to get connected to the internet (until you can find a wireless LAN driver).

If you’ve got as far as completing the installation and the machine boots OK then you’re well on the way.

The best way to deal with hardware support is first to try out different distro’s. Linux Suse is very nice, but then so is Ubuntu and PC linux OS… You should try a liveCD for these distro’s first. With my computer, I had some trouble with SUSE (just my hardware, not a problem with SUSE per se) and Ubuntu had no trouble with anything, however the reverse was true for my friend’s laptop.

Hardware support should be easy to come by in the openSUSE forums, but I find that Ubuntu forums are much more efficient (rather like comparing yahoo answers to ‘another answers site’. Ubuntu has a huge majority in active contributors – all of my answers have been answered within minutes.

samsung mini laptop.I just got an Acer Aspire 5741 laptop and Windows 7 Home Premium automatically came with it. What would I have to do to switch over to Linux?

Please help, and thank you!

Its very easy just go to http://www.tanguay.info/web/index.php?pg=howtos&id=22

You can download most linux distributions for free at their respective websites. They generally come in .ISO format which is an image of a CD file. You will need a special type of softare, such as PowerISO or UltraISO to mount it and burn it to a CD. Once you have done that you can just boot to that cd and follow the instructions to install it.

hello,
you must use a program to see how it is partitioned hdd (including some hide partitions made by win 7), repartitioned life your hdd (with data on it).
linux generally have a /boot partition and you possible will have some problems with dedicated boot partition of win 7
use an ubuntu desktop edition for example. if you want to choose an linux to see it download an live cd and run it without installation (boot from it and choose run without install)
If you want to reinstall win 7 and linux it is much simpler but tell me to give you some details.

run a partitioner program and tell me how it is partitioned your hdd with details (like primary / ntfs , boot hidden etc…)

Grow a neckbeard first. That helps.

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

Linux Mint 7 has a similar feature called mint4win and the directions given above for Wubi can be followed (Windows 7 run in Vista compatability mode)

Ubuntu 9.10 and Linux Mint 7 can also be run straight from the LiveCD without touching your Hard drive

At present I do not recommend Ubuntu 10.04/Linux Mint 9 owing to multiple stability issues
