Why will not my iPod nano 5th generation play in the developed in Subaru Forester iPod port?

I have a 2010 Subaru Forester and a new iPod 5th generation nano. The nano won’t play and I wanted to know why. Thanks!
I am employing the Aux port. I study that the 5th gen nano is not supported, but there is a computer software download you can get. Any concepts on that?
